Aussie Quilt Stars – Narelle Morris

How did you get started quilting? My quilting career started when Blessington Pty Ltd added HandiQuilter to their stable brands and I was asked to manage the brand!
How old were you when you made your first quilt? My first in real Quilting was around eight years ago, before that I was just a “wannabee” quilter!
Who taught you to quilt? I basically had to quilt to conduct my job successfully, so I did some beginner classes with Helen Godden and also with Craftsy’s help I taught myself.
What do you like best about quilting? The community of friends that quilting has brought me and the reward of a grandchilds smile when they receive their first quilt.
How do you decide what pattern to quilt? The patchwork style dictates the patterns it needs to enhance it. My quilting is just there to compliment the patchwork and together they shine!
Do you have any quilt tips you could share? When you are learning the skill of FMQ go easy on yourself, enjoy the process and to quote Angela Walters “A finished quilt is better than a perfect quilt top!”
How many quilts have you made and for whom have you made quilts? Many many quilts! Too many to remember how many! I love to make them for my six grandchildren as they grow, my siblings as they have significant birthdays, Blessington for show samples and I love making swap quilts for the MQG!
Where do you quilt and on what HQ machine? I am very fortunate to have my own studio where I love to quilt on my HQ Sweet Sixteen and HQ Avante on the Studio frame with HQ ProStitcher.
How much time do you quilt every week, day? I try to at least quilt several hours on a weekend but also like to stitch something everyday of possible!
What advice do you wish someone had told you when you started quilting? To go with my instincts and trust my own judgement. It took me a longtime to be confident in my ability.
